1997 Ray Lewis Game Worn & Signed Baltimore Ravens Helmet -- Photo Matched!
Two Hall of Fame linebackers are forever linked by this battle-scarred helmet, a gift from Lewis to Thomas we suspect occurred at the Pro Bowl on February 1, 1998. This summit of gridiron greats was Lewis' first and Thomas' last, a passing of the torch between two elite stars who continue to haunt the nightmares of contemporary quarterbacks.

Lewis would serve as one of the few bright spots for the 1997 Ravens during this second season of both franchise history and his own career, but the team and its greatest star would quickly rise to prominence together, securing Vince Lombardi's fabled trophy in just their fifth year. Certainly Lewis remains the most accomplished and revered figure in the team's two-decade history.

The battered black shell of the offered headgear suggests a full season of wear, and the experts at Resolution have definitively matched the various battle scars to photography from a December 14, 1997 victory over the Tennessee Oilers at Baltimore Memorial Stadium that saw Lewis lead all Ravens with eight tackles, six of them solo. Lewis' number "52" is applied to rear shell with a white-on-black decal, with another found inside, along with a "Gunther's [size] L" label and a reconditioning sticker. The sweaty wear to the interior padding perfectly complements the external condition. Original chin strap remains in place.

Lewis has autographed the back of the shell in bold but lightly scuffed silver sharpie, writing, "Thanks Hometeam, Ray Lewis #52." We suspect "Hometeam" was a nickname that Lewis had for Thomas, perhaps due to the fact that Thomas was from Miami, where Lewis played college ball. Thomas' number "58" is applied to a piece of athletic tape affixed over the facemask, most likely placed there by Lewis or an equipment manager to make sure the gift found its way into Thomas' locker.

Beyond the aforementioned Resolution paperwork, the helmet is validated by the original invoice from the Thomas sale in the spring of 2001. LOA from Resolution Photomatching. Certificate of purchase & invoice from Derrick Thomas estate sale. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC Authentic. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
