Description

1973 Dick Butkus Signed Game Worn Pro Bowl Helmet. "When I played pro football, I never set out to hurt anyone deliberately," Butkus once explained. "Unless it was, you know, important, like a league game or something." Though the Hall of Fame linebacker's career happened to coincide with a particularly challenging era in Chicago Bears history, no player in the league rattled the nerves and bones of opposing ball carriers like Butkus, who was dubbed "The Most Feared Man in the Game" on the cover of the September 21, 1970 edition of Sports Illustrated magazine. He joins the iconic Red Grange as the only two men to have their jersey numbers retired by both the University of Illinois and the Chicago Bears franchises.

Heritage Auction is proud to present this original Pro Bowl helmet that was used by Butkus on January 21, 1973, at Texas Stadium. Originating from the collection of longtime Chicago Bears and Cubs employee Ron Zera, the NFC Riddell Kra Lite II helmet includes its original 12-point suspension padding, while its original facemask is held together by replacement clips. As typical for most Butkus helmets from the era, his famed No. 51 is markered on the interior Riddell sticker, while "BUTKUS" is written in light ink on the back interior band. Signed and inscribed "To Dick" in faint black ink, the helmet shows remnants of the right Chicago "C", where it once was affixed.

One of only a few authentic Butkus gamers in the hobby, this example will surely stand out among any grouping of star helmets from the 1970's. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
