1957 Topps John Unitas #138 SGC Mint 9 - Pop Three, None Higher. Johnny Unitas always had confidence in himself, even when others didn't. After a standout high school career in his native Pittsburgh, Unitas had a tryout at Notre Dame, and Fighting Irish Coach Frank Leahy rejected Unitas, saying, "You're too skinny. You'll get killed out there." After playing at Louisville, Unitas was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1955, then cut before playing in any games. He then played for the Pittsburgh area semi-pro Bloomfield Rams for $6 a game. He made the Baltimore Colts in 1956, and in '57 became the Colts full-time starting QB, and led the NFL in TD passes (24) and passing yards (2,550). Unitas quarterbacked the Colts in 1958 in what has been called The Greatest Football Game ever played, when Baltimore defeated the New York Giants 23-17 in the NFL's first sudden death game for the league championship, a game nationally televised by NBC that vaulted pro football into national prominence. Overall, Unitas won three NFL Championships and Super Bowl V, was in 10 Pro Bowls and selected as NFL MVP three times. He became a Pro Football Hall of Famer in 1979.This visually attractive, and brightly colored horizontal card includes a smiling head shot of Unitas on the left and an action shot on the right. It is one of the keys to the set. The highest graded SGC 1957 Topps Unitas of the winning quarterback in the game that changed pro football.
Graded SGC Mint 9. This is a great card of a pro football immortal, the top SGC graded 1957 Topps John Unitas rookie card, is a pop three, none higher.
