Description

1952 Bowman Ollie Matson #127 PSA Mint 9 - Pop One, None Higher. Ollie Matson (1930-2011) was much more than a Hall of Fame caliber football player. He was an all-around athlete but his greatest talent was speed. That talent was on display as a member of the Olympic team for the 1952 Helsinki Summer games and earned two medals - a bronze in the 400-meters and a silver as part of the 4x400-meter relay. Future glory was evident from his college days at University of San Francisco. His senior year saw Matson help the Dons to a perfect 9-0 record. He led the league in rushing yards (1,566) and touchdowns (21). A victim by the attitude of the era, the Dons received no bids for bowls games because they had African-American players (Matson and Burl Toler) on the team rosters and they refused to play without them. A man described by coach Joe Kuharich called him, "the best all-around football player I've seen or coached." Dick Evans said of him, "the greatest athlete I've ever seen." In 1952 he was the 3rd pick in the first round of the NFL draft. During his career he did it all: Running back, receiver, kicker and punt returner who set a record with nine career returns for touchdowns and played defense. Over 14 years Matson was a six-time pro Bowler, 7 time First-Team All-Pro and a 1950's All decade Team. He is in the College Football, Philadelphia Eagles and the NFL Halls of Fame.

For gridiron fans, the 1952 Bowman series, particularly the large version is one of the most attractive sets ever produced. For many, this set is the cornerstone of their collections and seen not just as a collection but as a labor of love. From card #1 to the card #144 the Bowman staff produced works of art with no equal.

Graded PSA Mint 9. This is the only recorded example graded MINT by PSA with none rated higher. This card hits the collector trifecta. Card #127 not only features a HoFer but it is also his rookie card debut and is a noted short-print! The central portrait, along with the rest of the card is blemish-free. Corners are crisp, the front is glossy and the portrait is a thick hairline away from perfection.
