Description
"Concrete Charlie" goes back to war...
1949-55 Chuck Bednarik Game Worn Philadelphia Eagles Rookie-Format Jersey, MEARS A10. He enlisted in the Eighth Air Force straight out of high school, flying thirty combat missions over Germany as a B-24 waist-gunner during the Second World War. But VE Day would not quench Bednarik's thirst for combat, and he'd serve as a sixty-minute man with the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia upon his return to the States, becoming a three-time All-American and claiming the 1948 Maxwell Award in his senior season. So the favorite son of the City of Brotherly Love was a natural selection when the hometown Eagles claimed him with the first pick of the 1949 NFL draft, and this is the exact jersey format that would await him there, the style worn throughout the first seven years of his service.
At six-feet three inches in height and 233 pounds, "Concrete Charlie" was a bulldozing blocker and bone-crushing tackler, and yet remarkably durable considering his brutal playing style, missing only three games during his fourteen-season NFL career. If there is one relic from his playing career that best commemorates the man, it is this jersey, a garment coated in blood stains and literally dozens of team repairs to bear witness to the mayhem.
The white durene shell features dual sleeve stripes and green felt on front and back reporting the number "60" that was properly retired after Bednarik's Hall of Fame service to the team was complete. Original crotchpiece remains intact--uncommon for a time when jerseys were often modified for secondary practice wear--and it is here that we find the correct "MacGregor Goldsmith size 50" manufacturer's label and a washing instructions tag. Finally, a bold black sharpie signature appears at upper left chest.
In its 100% original and unaltered state, and bearing game wear characterized by the experts at MEARS as "optimal," the jersey comes by its perfect rating honestly, and stands as one of the finest gridiron gamers we've encountered from the early post-war period. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
