    Description

1943 Heisman Trophy Winner's Ring Presented to Angelo Bertelli from the Bertelli Family. The first member of the legendary Notre Dame Fighting Irish to earn college football's most prestigious individual award, Bertelli participated in just six of the 1943 season's ten games before Uncle Sam came calling. But the six-foot one-inch, 173-pound tailback was brilliant during that abridged senior season under Hall of Fame coach Frank Leahy, completing twenty-five of his thirty-six passes for ten touchdowns. Bertelli's time in South Bend is considered a golden age for the school, the team absorbing only three losses during his three seasons in uniform.

Bertelli would ultimately be sent to the Pacific Theater where he was nearly killed by a Japanese mortar shell during the Battle of Iwo Jima in 1945. He'd return to the States to play three seasons of professional football in the All-America Football Conference before turning to a broadcasting career, most notably as color analyst for the Princeton University team.

But this offering symbolizes the high-water mark of Bertelli's historic gridiron career, though Heisman rings were issued retroactively to recipients of the famous bronze statues who came along before rings were first issued. Our best guess is this happened some time in the 1980's or 1990's.

A figural trophy is set at center of a field of genuine diamonds on the ring face, with "Heisman Memorial Trophy" standing in bold block lettering at the perimeter. Left shank reports, "Downtown Athletic Club of New York, Founded 1928," while right identifies the recipient by surname and school above another image of the fabled trophy and the words, "The Heisman, Since 1935."

Interior band is stamped "HJ 14K" and measures to a size thirteen (13). Total weight is forty-five grams (45 g.). Minimal wear evident. Original hinged wooden display box is included. Letter of provenance from Bertelli family.
