1939 Heisman Memorial Trophy Award Presentation Program Signed by Nile Kinnick. Update: A PSA Full LOA is included with this lot

Before his 1939 Heisman-winning season, Nile Kinnick scribed his prophecy to one of the most important seasons in collegiate football history: "For three years, nay for fifteen years, I have been preparing for this last year of football. I anticipate becoming the roughest, toughest all-around back yet to hit this conference. I'm looking forward to showing [Iowa head coach Eddie] Anderson what a real football player looks like - so hold your hats."

Here we find tangible proof of Kinnick's resolve, a collecting Grail fittingly cloaked in shimmering gold that was originally issued to an attendee of the December 6, 1939 banquet at Manhattan's Downtown Athletic Club. On this date, in this place, Kinnick would become the fifth member of a brotherhood of gridiron excellence that now includes many of the greatest names in the history of the sport.

However this joyous occasion would see tragedy trailing close behind, assigning to Kinnick the gloomy distinction as the most valuable autograph in the collecting subgenre. Three and a half years after his Heisman Trophy presentation, Kinnick's F4F Wildcat sunk to the bottom of the Gulf of Paria off the coast of Venezuela during a World War II training exercise, taking its pilot down with it. As such, Kinnick's autograph supply finds the hobby's widest gap between supply and demand.

Presented is the exemplar that stands atop the hierarchy of that woefully insufficient population, most likely signed the evening that Kinnick took ownership of John Heisman's hefty bronze prize. The black fountain pen signature thunders across an image of Kinnick on an interior page at 7/10 strength, while the back cover displays a scattering of glue remnants from it once being placed in a scrapbook. In addition, the title page is signed in fountain pen ink by Drake standout Pug Manders. Thankfully, its original tassel still remains. Full LOA from SGC Authentic. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
