1919 George Halas Signed New York Yankees Player's Contract. The 1919 document that transferred Babe Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the New York Yankees is widely considered the most consequential in the history of baseball, but this document nearly precipitated a future in which the Chicago Bears (and possibly even the National Football League) never even existed. Halas had caught the eye of legendary Yankees scout Bob Connery back in 1914, but a promise to his mother to finish college and military service during World War I delayed a partnership until the 1919 season this incredibly rare and important contract represents. Soon after being discharged from the Navy, Halas agreed to a $400 monthly salary with his signature upon the offered document that almost changed American sports history forever.

Early reviews were highly positive, a New York Times journalist writing, "It is unusual for a college player to jump into the big leagues and become a regular the first season, but this is just the thing that Halas threatens to do. He is swift afoot and is a heady and proficient base runner. He covers a lot of ground in the outfield, and best of all he is a world of enthusiasm for the game." But a hip injury in a spring training contest proved to be an enduring hardship, and Halas would play in just a dozen Big League games, batting a paltry .091, before Miller Huggins sent him down to the minors, ultimately precipitating a career change that would establish Halas as one of the most essential pioneers of professional football.

The contract has been made fragile by age and fire damage, but it has been taped together at the seams and still retains all text, including the all-important signatures of the future Hall of Famers--Halas and Yankees owner Jacob Ruppert. They survive at strengths of 8/10 and 9/10 respectively. Certainly any condition concerns must be forgiven and forgotten in light of the tremendous rarity and sports history significance.
