Turn of the Century Princeton University Tigers Game Worn Football Jersey - One of the Most Significant Jerseys in Existence! In 1869 the sports world was changed forever, as the first college football game took place between bitter rivals Rutgers University and the College of New Jersey, which is now called Princeton University. The rules and standards were extremely different from those of today's game, but that first contest set the stage for the ever-popular sport that occupies fan's Saturdays each and every year from late August through January. From the styling period of the famous "Poe Brothers," of Princeton, we are proud to offer one of the earliest "Spalding" jerseys from a major college in existence, and it is accompanied with a definitive style match to a classic photograph of Princeton legend John Prentiss Poe Jr., brother of famed Edgar Allen Poe.
Arguably, the most important football jersey on the face of the planet, the wool turtleneck features Princeton's prototypical orange sleeve stripes, while the proper style 5" "P" is sewn at front and center. Its original "Spalding" label is in the rear interior tail, and marks one of the oldest tags from the famed sporting goods company we have seen. A nice scattering of team repairs is presented throughout the jersey, while it is amazingly free of any major flaws. An absolutely historic and iron-clad piece of gridiron nostalgia, which will automatically catapult any vintage sports memorabilia collection to the top. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
