Mary Jane Sorgel "The Packer Golden Girl" Velvet Cape Worn During the 1961 NFL Championship Game. She labeled it as the greatest day in her life, and any fan who attended the 1961 NFL Championship would agree with Mary Jane Sorgel's feelings that it was one of the most significant games in Green Bay Packers history. Not only were the small town Packers of Green Bay facing the Giants of the Big Apple, but it was the first NFL Championship Game ever played at New City Stadium, which is now referred to as Lambeau Field. The Packers walloped the Giants 37-0 on that magical day, and the game would go down as the first of many championship victories for head coaching legend Vince Lombardi.

The weather at game time was 20 degrees, and it had just snowed 14 inches, but the frigid climate did not stop the "Packer Golden Girl" from leading the Packer band out to mid-field, the same spot that she would put on the baton performance of a lifetime in front of nearly 40,000 Titletown fans.

Offered here is the gorgeous red velvet and white fur cape that Sorgel (then known as Mary Jane Van Duyse) wore during that special day. Made by her grandmother specifically for the '61 championship, it had superior eye appeal and also aided in keeping the Golden Girl warm. Featured during Packers documentaries on HBO, the NFL Network and others, it is a true piece of Green and Gold history and remains in flawless condition, while the white fur material remains intact. One of numerous pieces offered in our October catalog auction from the girlfriend of Curly Lambeau and Packers cheerleading pioneer Mary Jane Sorgel. Letter of provenance from Mary Jane Sorgel.
