Early 1940's George Halas Game Worn Chicago Bears Sideline Jacket with Bears Coach Letter. The Mount Rushmore of professional football would unquestionably feature this man, the founder, owner and head coach of the Chicago Bears, and one of the men most instrumental in the birth of the National Football League itself. He'd play a leading role in six NFL Championships in nearly a half-century of service as head coach, the first two as an active roster player as well.

His initials have ridden the sleeve of Bears jerseys for decades now, but that's about as close as most collectors have come to an article from Halas' football wardrobe. All major auction results databases come up empty in a search for game worn Halas material, so this thrilling lot should be seen for the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity it likely is.

The tale of the gorgeous letterman-style jacket is ably recounted in the included 1998 letter from Bears veteran Bob Snyder, who played for the team from 1939-43--closing out his playing career with an NFL Championship the day he took ownership of this important relic--before beginning a quarter-century term as a coach. Excerpted:

"Halas was not with the Bears in 43-44-45, returned for 46 season. After championship game 43 we had a party in locker room. Our four coaches had placed their coaching uniforms on a table in the dressing room--Notting, Nagurski & yours truly were the last to leave. I took a jacket, Roy a pair of shoes & Bronk a cap. When we got outside, I had Halas jacket."

This revelation would have come as Snyder noticed the embroidered swatch at lower button path reading, "Halas." While that iconic, inaugural class Pro Football Hall of Fame name is inarguably the highlight feature of the garment, a close second is the utterly gorgeous chenille team logo patch over the heart, a design so spectacular that a petition should be immediately started to reinstitute the design for 2018 and beyond.

Lower rear interior holds the manufacturer's label from the original owner's own sporting goods company, "May & Halas, Chicago [size] 48-35." Seven decades of storage are apparent, but our catalog imagery should convey that the glorious aesthetics of the piece are in no way undermined. Quite simply one of the most significant uniform items to ever find its way from the professional gridiron to the collectibles marketplace. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Letter of provenance from Bears coach Bob Snyder. Auction LOA from SGC Authentic (LOP autograph). Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (LOP autograph).
