Circa 1947-48 Pete Pihos Game Worn Philadelphia Eagles Jersey. As a youngster living in Philadelphia at 2758 N. 22nd St., just a minute from Shibe Park, our consignor, Luciana "Joe" DeCrosta spent the majority of his free time as the unofficial clubhouse boy for the A's, and also did odd jobs around the Eagles locker room for equipment manager Fred Schubach. In the late 1940's, all of DeCrosta's hard work paid off when Schubach asked him if he wanted a jersey. Of course he said yes, and he was given the offered Eagles jersey that was worn by Hall of Fame legend Pete Pihos. An esteemed member of the NFL's 1940's All Decade Team, as well as a selection for the league's 75th Anniversary Team, the innovative and highly skilled tight end was inducted into Canton in 1970, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1966.
One of the most significant and rare styles we've handled from any Philly sports star and era, the green and white knit jersey is dated to 1947-48, as the "[size] 44 MacGregor Goldsmith" tag was issued between 1945-52, and the last player to wear No. 35 for the Eagles before Pihos was in 1940. Exhibiting nice wear, it has several small unrepaired holes in the fabric, but still remains in solid condition. Gorgeous sewn-on numerals adorn the front and back, while a crotch piece with original buttons remains intact. An absolutely breathtaking piece of gridiron nostalgia, it's a superb representation from the six-time Pro Bowler and Indiana alum, who will forever be remembered as the "First Great Tight End in Philadelphia". Letter of provenance from consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
