Description
2011 Colin Kaepernick Debut Game Worn & Signed San Francisco 49ers Rookie Jersey--Photo Matched! Like Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali before him, Colin Kaepernick finds the American public starkly divided between those who admire his principled stand on matters of race, and those who despise him for his methods. Certainly collectors who fall into the latter camp will not be competitors for ownership of this lot, and they should draw no inferences from our presentation thereof. Our function in the collectibles marketplace is to tender articles of historical significance, not to take positions on matters of politics. And Colin Kaepernick--love him or loathe him--is undeniably one of the most significant figures in American sports today. It seems like ages ago when he was nothing other than the most dynamic player in the National Football League, scampering across the line of scrimmage and into enemy territory with a reckless abandon unprecedented at the quarterback position. His 181 rushing yards against the Green Bay Packers in the first game of the 2012 playoffs remains a QB single-game NFL record, and he'd go on to lead the Niners to the brink of Super Bowl glory that year. Now his absence/banishment from the League is his ultimate claim to fame--icon to some, villain to others.
Here's where it all started, the very first jersey worn by Colin Kaepernick in regular season NFL action, on October 2, 2011. His contribution was, rather oddly, just a single play--a hand-off to Frank Gore for a five-yard run in the first quarter on third-and-seventeen. San Francisco would punt on fourth down, and Alex Smith would play out the rest of the game at quarterback.
A careful examination of mesh holes provides the match to game footage, and pilling where the jersey tucked into Kap's pants, and (other than a small hit mark on the chest) the shirt exhibits properly light wear--Kaepernick wore red for his other two 2011 appearances. Number "7" is applied in red tackle twill to chest, shoulders and back, while "Kaepernick" stands in 2.25" block lettering across rear nameplate. Interior collar tells us an earlier shell was used: "09-42." Rear numeral is autographed in 10/10 silver sharpie with handwritten notation reading, "2011 Game Worn Rookie Jersey." A "Tri-Star" authentication sticker is affixed beside the autograph, but we do not have the matching certificate. LOA from Resolution Photomatching. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
