Paul Hornung's record falls in dramatic fashion after forty-six years

2006 LaDainian Tomlinson Game Worn San Diego Chargers Jersey, Worn to Break Single-Season Scoring Record. A simple off-tackle play in the second quarter of a Kansas City Chiefs visit to Qualcomm Stadium on December 17, 2006 saw the superstar Chargers running back break free for an eighty-five yard gallop to paydirt to cement a long list of season superlatives:

    · Thirty-one (31) touchdowns.
    · Twenty-eight (28) rushing touchdowns.
    · 186 points scored, extending the record he had set with a fifteen-yard first quarter touchdown run to topple Paul Hornung.
    · Eight consecutive multi-touchdown games, breaking a tie for the record with John Riggins.

Few garments in the Pro Football Hall of Fame carry quite as much significance as the offered jersey, the finest known from a man who will surely cruise to a landslide first-ballot enshrinement there in 2017. "It was absolutely perfect," Tomlinson said of the longest touchdown of his historic career. "I don't know if you can draw it any better. Once I saw the crease, and the safety took a bad angle, I felt like I was running track again. I felt like I could go all the way." He'd finish the contest with 199 yards and two touchdowns on twenty-five carries, and would continue on to cap the regular season as the owner of the NFL's top figures for total yards (1815) and yards per game (113.4).

The blue mesh beauty speaks to the brutality of NFL trench warfare, the shoulders speckled with hit marks and white paint from Chiefs facemasks. Number "21" is applied in tri-color tackle twill to chest, sleeves and verso, where "Tomlinson" spans shoulders in three-inch white block. Lightning bolts adorn each shoulder. Interior collar holds two printed labels reporting "06-48" and "S," while manufacturer's tagging has been lost to Tomlinson's elasticized waistband customization, short of the "100% Nylon, Made in Berlin, WI" label at interior lateral hem.

Ironclad provenance is assured by a team-issued certificate of authenticity assuring "that this San Diego Chargers jersey was worn by LaDainian Tomlinson thru 12/17/06 vs. Kansas City Chiefs." With the near certainty of a significant price "bump" when Canton comes calling for Tomlinson in 2017, investment-minded collectors will be watching closely when this record-setting relic takes its turn on the Platinum Night auction block. Certificate of Authenticity from San Diego Chargers. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
