Description
1989 Joe Montana Game Worn & Signed San Francisco 49ers Jersey -- Video & Photo Matched to 12/11 vs. Rams. Joe Cool would complete his fourth summit of the NFL mountaintop this season, his Super Bowl XXIV victory pulling him even with fellow Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw as the most championship-laden quarterback in league history to date. It was utter dominance from the opening bell of the 1989 season as Montana cruised to an NFL-best record of 14-2 during the regular season, and those two losses had been narrow defeats, five points in total. Montana led the league with 270.8 passing yards per game and a 112.4 passer rating to earn his first of two consecutive NFL MVP Awards. This was unquestionably a master at the absolute peak of his powers. The presented white mesh gamer found Montana coming up on the winning side of a Golden State showdown, defeating the Los Angeles Rams 30-27 in Anaheim. Montana completed 30 of 42 passing attempts for 458 yards and three touchdowns. This was his first of just two career games to exceed 450 passing yards, that outrageous tally made possible by a pair of 90+-yard touchdown strikes to John Taylor. If you're looking for high drama, you've found it here.
The jersey entered the collecting world almost immediately after that thrilling contest, as an article from the December 16, 1989 issue of The San Francisco Chronicle reported that ownership of the jersey was auctioned a week prior to the game to benefit Burlingame High School athletics. The jersey was presented to the winner by Joe's mother Theresa after the game. We include a copy of that newspaper article in this lot.
The provenance is locked down even further by a definitive video match from the experts at MeiGrey, who reference dirt marks and slight angling of the verso numerals in their examination. Sports Investors Authentication provides their own photo match letter of authenticity as well. All identifiers are screened on, the legendary number "16" applied to chest, sleeves and verso, where "Montana" stands in three-inch block across rear nameplate. Lower left front tail is tagged, "Russell Athletic [size] 44," with a "100% Nylon" flap tag anchored at bottom. Montana himself provides further assurance of that outrageous event, adding a "12/11/89" notation to the 10/10 black sharpie signature on front numeral.
It's the greatest regular season gamer of Joe Montana's first MVP and fourth Super Bowl season, with arguably the strongest provenance of any Montana jersey in the hobby.
