1987 Phil Simms Super Bowl XXI Game Worn New York Giants Jersey. It's arguably the most significant New York Giants jersey of the past half century, worn by the team's stalwart quarterback as he led Big Blue to its first Super Bowl victory. In fact, it was the Giants' first appearance in a Championship game since their loss to the Chicago Bears in 1963, a drought that ran in parallel for over a decade to that of the New York Yankees, the favored baseball team of most Giants enthusiasts.

So the hopes of a hungry Big Apple fanbase grew exponentially with each subsequent regular season victory, as Simms led the team to a dominating fourteen and two record on the strength of 3,487 passing yards and twenty-one touchdowns through the air. On the other side of the ball, "The Big Blue Wrecking Crew," anchored by NFL's Most Valuable Player Lawrence Taylor, held the opposition to twenty points or fewer in all but the first and last regular season games. They only tightened the noose in the playoffs, allowing just three total points in the divisional and conference showdowns to earn a trip to the Rose Bowl and a meeting with the AFC Champion Denver Broncos.

And there, in front of over 100,000 spectators, and more than 87 million in the television audience, the Giants even more vigorously made its case for recognition as the greatest edition in franchise history. After battling to a ten-to-nine halftime deficit, the tightest margin in Super Bowl history, Simms led his dynamic Giants offense to twenty-four unanswered points, leading to the first televised Super Bowl Gatorade bath for coach Bill Parcells as the game concluded in a thirty-nine to twenty result. Phil Simms would be named Super Bowl MVP, and star in the very first "I'm going to Disney World!" television ad, delivering the line as he walked off the field in victory.

The blue mesh jersey has been definitively photomatched to that historic contest by MeiGray, a study of the mesh hole patterning confirming the glorious attribution without any shadow of a doubt. Simms' number "11," since retired from the team wardrobe in his honor, is screened to chest, sleeves and reverse, where "Simms" is applied in white paint to the rear nameplate. A memorial patch to honor former Giants great Carl "Spider" Lockhart, claimed by cancer at the tragically early age of forty-three, adorns upper chest. Originally on display at the New York Giants' Legacy Club at Metlife Stadium, the jersey's lower left front tail reveals proper dual "Sand-Knit" tagging, reporting Giants exclusivity and size "44." The "86" year swatch is affixed to the left.

A few small contact holes are apparent on the jersey front, and the front numerals bear a secretarial inscription that was apparently applied by a clubhouse man who decided to honor the request of the autograph seeker himself. A personalization has been removed, suggesting that the rest could likewise be scrubbed clean if desired. Jersey was originally gifted to a notable hobby pioneer from the son of team equipment manager Ed Wagner. Also included in the lot is the plate from Simms' Super Bowl locker, acquired directly from Giants running back Tony Galbreath. LOA from MeiGray. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
