    Description

1987 John Stallworth Game Worn Pittsburgh Steelers Jersey. Spurred on by the 1970 NFL-AFL merger, a visionary commissioner in Pete Rozelle, NFL Films' glorifying cinematography paired with John Facenda's Voice of God narrative, and a host of new and exciting individual stars, the NFL exploded during the 1970's, reaching new heights in attendance, television viewership and general public consciousness.

As if almost overnight, the league seemed to transition from a predictable "two yards and a cloud of dust" mindset, headlined by Halas and Lombardi, into a more wide-open style of play, which reflected the Me Decade ethos, by championing individual star power, flair and showmanship. "Student body right" gave way to the esoteric runs of Simpson and offensive aerial machinations of Sid Gillman. The changes were so dramatic that it was like going from black and white to color television.

Two of receivers who benefited most from this new style of play were the Steelers' dynamic duo of Lynn Swann and John Stallworth. Often overlooked on the star-studded Pittsburgh lineup, Stallworth was just as important as any of the team's other big names and his penchant for making big plays in big games is evidenced by his Super Bowl record for highest career average per catch, a staggering 24.4.

The Hall of Famer and four-time Super Bowl champion's road durene reports "82" on the front, back and sleeves, all sewn-on in black tackle twill. "Stallworth" appears on a back nameplate, sewn-on in gold and black tackle twill. The tail contains the Sand-Knit 'exclusive' and size ("46") tags and an "87" year swatch. There are three fantastic repairs evident on the shoulder, arm and back. It should also be noted that the Steelers were the only NFL team at this late juncture that were still using durene. In that sense, this shirt is a sentinel for the sunset of the durene era.

Originally sourced, along with a few 1960's "Batman-style" durenes from a Steelers employee in the late 1980's, this is only the second Stallworth jersey we are aware of that has ever been offered at public auction. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
