1984-85 Jim Kelly Game Worn Houston Gamblers USFL Jersey, MEARS A10 - With Multiple Team Repairs! Due to fellow quarterback John Elway's well-publicized reluctance to play for the Baltimore Colts, which was the team that chose him in the 1983 NFL Draft, Jim Kelly's agent asked whether there were any teams he would not play for. After finishing his college career, the University of Miami alum, who was not a fan of the cold weather, listed the Vikings, Packers and Bills. Despite his dislike for frigid temperatures, Buffalo picked him with its 14th pick, and according to Kelly, "I cried. I didn't really literally cry. I just had tears. I'm like, 'You got to be kidding me.'"

But even with his reservations of playing for the Bills, Kelly met with the team to negotiate his contract, but a Bills secretary mistakenly let Bruce Allen, general manager of the rival USFL's Chicago Blitz, reach Kelly on the telephone, and he persuaded him to leave the meeting. Eventually, the USFL made an offer to Kelly to play on any team he chose, and he signed with the Houston Gamblers.

While leading coach Mouse Davis' famed run-and-shoot offense, Kelly dominated the league, while throwing for 9,842 yards and 83 touchdowns, and he won the USFL's MVP and Rookie of the Year in 1984.

Presented here is one of the most coveted gamers from the defunct league. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS, it exhibits heavy wear, with scuffing and a scattering of team repairs throughout. The proper Russell [size] 44" tag is in the tail, and it remains all-original and immaculate in every way. LOA from MEARS, A10. Letter of provenance from Ian Kindler. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
