    Description

1977-79 Rolf Benirschke Game Worn San Diego Chargers Jersey. An all-time Charger great, Rolf Benirschke spent all ten of his pro season with the San Diego franchise. In 1979, after a life threatening illness caused his weight to drop from 184 pounds to 124 pound and left him barely able to walk, his teammates decided to make him captain for a day so that he could go out onto the field for the game-opening coin toss, as they believed he was going to die.

Rolf's 350-pound teammate and friend Louie Kelcher escorted his sick friend onto the field. The crowd went crazy. At mid-field, Steeler captain Mean Joe Green said to Rolf, "They must really love you." When they headed back off the field, Rolf told Kelcher "I don't know if I can make it" so Kelcher held Rolf's hand and the two walked off together. It was perhaps the most human moment ever witnessed on a football field.

Miraculously, Rolf recovered and was an All-Pro in 1980. In the 1981 playoffs versus the Dolphins, he kicked the winning field goal in the seminal Epic in Miami. He retired as the Chargers' all-time leading scorer and the third most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history.

Rolf's white/blue/gold mesh jersey, with screened on identifiers, has been custom tailored to provide unusual extra length to the tail (possibly to accommodate the ostomy bag he wore during his comeback - see Getty Images 640235202 for example) but the two Medalist Sand-Knit tags and "44" flap tag are still intact. Appropriate game wear evident. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
