Photo matched, letter of provenance from Griffin himself!

1974-75 Archie Griffin Game Worn Ohio State Buckeyes Helmet--Heisman Trophy Seasons!

UPDATE: Please note that the only College All-Star Game in which Griffin appeared was played at Chicago's Soldier Field on July 23, 1976, several months after the conclusion of Griffin's senior season. As the included letter of provenance reports, Griffin gave the helmet to his friend during training for that game at nearby Northwestern University. This fact strongly suggests that this historic helmet was the last of Griffin's college career and that it was used during both the 1974 and 1975 Heisman Trophy seasons.

"He's a better young man than he is a football player,"
said legendary Buckeyes head coach Woody Hayes of Griffin, "and he's the best football player I've ever seen." The College Football Hall of Fame running back held at the close of his amateur career the NCAA career rushing record at 5,589 yards, and remains the only back to lead the Big Ten Conference in rushing for three straight years. But, of course, Archie Griffin's greatest distinction is his ownership of a pair of Heisman Trophies, the only man to claim college football's greatest personal prize twice.

Presented is the most significant artifact from that remarkable age of dominance ever to appear on the hobby's auction block. The helmet exhibits the heavy signs of combat one would expect from a junior and senior season populated by 1,695 and 1,450 yards on the ground respectively, with the various scrapes and gashes allowing definitive matching to period game photography. We draw your attention specifically to a thin white slice running perpendicular to the center striping on the left crown, and red paint transfers on the left hemisphere of the shell, the latter faded but still readily visible. These are identical in placement to those visible in a tattered magazine photograph of an Ohio State battle with the Fighting Illini. Likewise a perfect match are the unique facemask style, the unusual plastic washer at the temple mounts and placement of the chin strap snaps. Number "45" decals appear at bottom of shell at rear, and "Archie 45" is written in faded marker at left interior ear.

Griffin authenticates and dates the relic in black marker on left side, signing "Archie Griffin 74/75." His handwritten and signed letter of provenance appears to misreport the vintage, as he writes, "This is my Ohio State football helmet that I wore in my 1973 and 1974 football years." These seasons would represent his sophomore and junior campaigns, assuring just one season of Heisman-quality wear, but our strong suspicion is that the notation on the helmet is correct, as it would be more likely that Griffin retained his final OSU helmet rather than retire one with Heisman good luck in 1974 to wear a different one for his senior year of 1975.

Finally, we have a handwritten letter from the gentleman who received the helmet personally from Griffin. It reads, in part, "This helmet Archie gave to me as I assisted him during his three week training at Northwestern to prepare for the College All Star game."

As the sole uniform article to have been a part of every moment of back-to-back Heisman Trophy campaigns, the presented helmet finds few competitors for the title of "most significant NCAA game worn football piece on Earth." Short of the standard removal of the laudatory Buckeye stickers that once dotted its shell, and the aforementioned autograph and notation that takes their place, the helmet remains unchanged from its period of service to Griffin, right down to its original hardware and chin strap. A truly thrilling opportunity for the elite football collector. Letter of provenance from Archie Griffin. Photo matches. LOA from Heritage Auctions. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
