A tough single-year style from "The Secretary of Defense!"

1971 Deacon Jones Game Worn Los Angeles Rams Jersey, MEARS A8. The sans-serif format of the number "75" screened to chest, sleeves and reverse of this battle-scarred white durene gamer was worn in the City of Angels just a single season, the one that would prove to be the last for Jones prior to his journey due south to San Diego for a 1972-73 tour of duty with the Chargers. Jones earned his Canton bronze through his preternatural abilities in sacking the quarterback, a term he actually coined, explaining, "You take all the offensive linemen and put them in a burlap bag, and then you take a baseball bat and beat on the bag. You're sacking them, you're bagging them. And that's what you're doing with a quarterback" Though the statistic didn't exist in the first years of Jones' NFL tenure, Pro Football Weekly attributes 173 1/2 to his tally, which would be third on the all-time list, and first at the time of his 1974 retirement.

We can see the signs of brutal scrimmage warfare throughout the garment's surface, with multiple team repairs specking the chest, shoulders and right sleeve. Full crotchpiece remains in place with "XL" size and washing instruction labels in residence, but the "Rawlings" manufacturer's tag absent. The loss of this label accounts for one of the point deductions on the MEARS worksheet, the other being the restoration of the "Jones" nameplate on shoulders.

Uniforms from this transformative figure in the professional game are exceedingly rare--in fact, only a single helmet appears in fifteen years of major auction results in our database. So advanced football jersey collectors take note. This may be your very last opportunity to bring this 1980 Canton inductee into your personal portfolio. LOA from MEARS, A8. Letter of provenance from consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
