Worn for entire 1968 season and training/preseason of 1969!

1968 Sonny Jurgensen Game Worn Washington Redskins Jersey. It was a balmy September afternoon at Wrigley Field when the Washington Redskins came to Chicago to open the 1968 NFL season. After falling to an early fourteen-point deficit, the Bears found the Washington end zone late in the first quarter, and then backed the Redskins up to their own one-yard line early in the second. And so, the stage was set for one of the rarest feats in football.

For just the fourth time in NFL history, and, remarkably, the third time in the history of the franchise history, the Redskins passed for a ninety-nine yard touchdown, Jurgensen finding halfback Gerry Allen thirty-five yards upfield with nothing but open turf ahead. The two teams would then trade touchdowns for the balance of the game, with the Redskins hitting a late thirty-seven yard field goal to complete the score at thirty-eight to twenty-eight.

While we cannot definitively place this jersey on Sonny Jurgensen's torso for that special feat, this is the precise style he wore for that game, with the sole exception of the NFL 50th anniversary patch which was added for the 1969 preseason. Our research confirms both that this style was last worn in the regular season in 1968, and that, as was typical at the time, it was worn in the following year's preseason exhibitions before transitioning to a new regular season format.

The heavy game wear likewise suggests a full season's play and beyond, the white durene toned by sweat and age, the maroon tackle twill identifiers reporting the fabled number "9" on chest, sleeves and reverse showing heavy abrasions, with team repairs on back. Manufacturer's labeling has been lost to trimming of the crotchpiece, but the embroidered "68" year swatch remains.

Like several other Washington-related game used articles within this Platinum Night auction, the jersey is consigned by the family of Fred Baxter, who served for decades as equipment manager and trainer for the Washington Redskins of the NFL and Senators of the Major Leagues. Letter of provenance from the family of Washington Redskins assistant trainer/equipment manager Fred Baxter.
