1968 Deacon Jones Game Worn Los Angeles Rams Jersey--Photo Matched to Three Different Games! A half a century later, many old quarterbacks still see this jersey in their nightmares, worn by the "Fearsome Foursome" leader who coined the term "sack," and who would have retired with the number one ranking in NFL history had that statistic been recognized during his career. "Pro Football Weekly" retroactively assigned 173 1/2 to Jones for his fourteen seasons of service to the professional gridiron, a tally that would find him in the third-place position today behind only fellow Canton immortals Bruce Smith and Reggie White.The 1968 season from which this battle-scarred white durene jersey derives saw Jones recording his season-high in quarterback predation, his twenty-two sacks having been matched in 1964 but never surpassed. The garment is a Frankenstein's monster of jagged team repairs, numbering in the dozens, mute witnesses to the brutality of Jones' game. Even the durable blue tackle twill material forming number "75" on chest, back and sleeves show at least one surgical repair per location.
This vast network of scars serves as the basis for Resolution Photomatching's ability to link the garment to three different games--September 29 at the Cleveland Browns, November 17 at the San Francisco 49ers and either October 20 or November 10 against the Atlanta Falcons (the Rams wore white in both).
The spectacular game use, the multiple photo matches and the rare and desirable style--the numbers sewn rather than screened and appearing in the distinctive tall format on the sleeves--establish this garment unequivocally as the finest Jones representation in the hobby, bar none. The jersey survives in 100% original and unaltered condition but for the loss of the year tag beneath the "Sand Knit [size] 54" tagging in the crotch piece. Scattered foxing throughout is to be expected for a jersey of this advanced vintage, and causes little visual distraction. This is everything the educated NFL jersey collector craves.
