Description

1968-69 Lance Alworth Game Worn San Diego Chargers Jersey, MEARS A10. He was the first player inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame whose career was primarily contained within the American Football League, a fitting tribute to a man instrumental in legitimizing the scrappy challenger to the NFL's stranglehold on the professional game. Alworth's coronation as the "Top Pro Receiver" on the cover of the December 13, 1965 issue of Sports Illustrated served as a harbinger of big things to come for the AFL, with Bambi playing a similar role to that which Dr. J would play to elevate the American Basketball Association.

Our lot title presents a two-season vintage based upon the particular tagging format, but the shoulder bolt placement on this gorgeous powder blue home durene suggests the earlier half, a 1968 season that saw Alworth lead the AFL with sixty-eight receptions and 1,312 receiving yards. It would prove to be his last of five career double-digit touchdown seasons as well, so it's a virtual certainty that this garment saw paydirt.

Number "19" is applied in white tackle twill to chest, back, and below the bolts on each sleeve. "Alworth" stands across the rear nameplate in 2.75" block. "Sand-Knit Size 46" label remains at lower left front tail. Wear is solid and consistent, with great interior shoulder abrasion from contact with Alworth's shoulder pads. An area of yellow discoloration on the front number "9" appears to be a liniment stain. A picture-perfect specimen well deserving of its faultless MEARS assessment. LOA from MEARS, A10. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
