Photo matched to 1970 Topps card!

1967-68 Willie Wood Game Worn Green Bay Packers Jersey. An eight-time Pro Bowler, five-time NFL Champion and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Wood nearly faded into obscurity before his professional career had even begun. After this first African-American quarterback in the history of the Pacific Coast Conference was overlooked in the 1960 NFL draft, Wood penned a letter to legendary Packers head coach Vince Lombardi requesting a try-out, the start of a dozen years of Titletown brilliance.

Gnarly team repairs on both sides of the jersey speak to Wood's conversion from QB to the decidedly more violent role of free safety, and it is the repair contained within the frame of the front numerals that provides a definitive photo match to 1970 Topps Football card #261. White tackle twill forms the distinctively-fonted number "24" applied to chest, back and shoulders. Lower left front tail holds proper "Sand-Knit [size] 44" label.

We were tempted to expand the potential range of this important garment to include 1969, and we remain on the fence about that addition, as a few small holes in the left shoulder may be either the result of bone-jarring tackles or the removal of the NFL Fiftieth Anniversary patch. The heavy game wear is clearly strong evidence of multiple seasons of use, inclusive of Wood's fifth and final Championship campaign. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
