Description
1962 Ernie Davis College All-Star Game Jersey. The recent movie "The Express" immortalized Ernie Davis' sensational, but tragically-short career and the sporting world will never know the heights of NFL stardom he could have achieved. Davis' final scheduled career game was the now defunct College All-Star game (August 3, 1962), which pitted the best collegians against the reigning NFL Champion. For the 1962 season, that was the Green Bay Packers, and after a close struggle for three periods (21-20), the Pack pulled away to a decisive 42-20 win.The All-Stars may have been able to stay closer or even win had not their two best running backs, Ernie Davis and Ronnie Bull, been felled by pre-game injuries.
Bull of course would go on to a solid career with the Bears. Davis was not so fortunate. Having just won the Heisman Trophy and been the Liberty Bowl MVP, he started showing signs of acute illness during the All-Star Camp, having strength and equilibrium issues, and did not play in the game.
He was present with the collegians, participated in photo day and Times Charities functions wearing this jersey. It is not known whether he dressed for the late summer classic or watched in street clothes.
Despite not boasting the "game-worn" label, this shirt is still one of the most significant college jerseys to ever hit the auction block. Almost equally as gorgeous as it is "important," to the game-worn collecting hobby, this stunning star-spangled jersey features the proper sewn-on numerals on the front and verso, with the "King-O'Shea" and "[size] 48" double tagging in the tail.
