1961 Tom Brookshire Game Worn & Unwashed Philadelphia Eagles Jersey From His Last NFL Game with Provenance. Tom Brookshier was a two-time Pro Bowl defensive back and starter on the 1960 Philadelphia Eagles NFL championship team. In 1989, he was inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame and his #40 was retired by the club. Immediately following his retirement, Brookshier began a very successful career in broadcasting, which spanned more than twenty-five years and included stints as the Eagles color commentator, co-host of This Week in Pro Football, and partnering with Pat Summerall on CBS, where the duo called Super Bowl X, XII, and XIV.

Offered here is Brookshire's gamer from the 1961 season and last NFL game. The road Kelly green durene jersey with three-quarter sleeves and intact crotch-piece displays "40" on the front, back, and sleeves, all sewn-on in white satin twill. Also, the front and back numerals feature serif "4"'s, which were a part of the Eagles font family at that time, while the sleeve numerals appear in a taller, thinner, and serif-less font. Furthermore, the original six-button crotch-piece contains a MacGregor Size 44" label and a washing instructions tag. This exemplar exhibits wonderful wear, including crinkling and fraying to the identifiers, dirt stains, and a snag on the right sleeve.

Brookshire's career ended because of a compound leg fracture, sustained while tackling Willie Gallimore in the Eagles 16-14 victory over the Chicago Bears at Franklin Field on November 5, 1961. He was taken directly to Hahnemann Hospital, while still in uniform, and gifted his jersey to the attending radiologist telling him to "go put it up somewhere because they will come looking for it. I'll say I don't know what happened to it." The radiologist put it in his locker and then took it home where it remained in storage for more than half a century.

In 2013, the radiologist posted a photo of the jersey on his hometown Facebook page, offering it to the person who could write the best essay as to why they think they are the biggest Philadelphia Eagles fan and why they are deserving of the jersey. In that post, he wrote:

"I performed the study at Hahnemann Hospital that Sunday afternoon. He gave me his #40 which I cherished all these years. When he was broadcasting on WIP, I called and offered him the jersey, thinking he was going to make the Hall of Fame. He told me, 'Enjoy it, I have been blessed and it means more to you than it would to me.' I have enjoyed it for 52 years and would like someone else to show it proudly. Never has been washed."

Our consignor was the winner of that contest. He will provide a letter of provenance, which includes a copy of the winning essay. Copy of the original Facebook post by the radiologist. Letter of provenance from the consignor. LOA from Heritage Auctions.
