1961 Ernie Davis Game Issued Syracuse Orangemen Jersey, Heisman Trophy Season. The 2008 feature film "The Express" brought about a resurgence in interest for this tragic superstar, but for those who remember his heroics both on and off the field, his star never faded. Born into the gritty steel belt of western Pennsylvania which has served as the training grounds for many of the gridiron's greatest stars, Davis would find more than fifty college scholarships waiting for him upon his high school graduation. He would follow in the footsteps of his own football idol, the great Jim Brown, choosing Syracuse University, and even going so far as to request the number "44" jersey that Brown had worn with such distinction. Only Davis could have done those digits justice.

This "game-issued" white thin cotton Syracuse "tear-away" jersey was presented to Al Mallette, sports editor of the Elmira "Star-Gazette," by Ernie Davis and Syracuse public relations man Val Pinchbeck on February 3, 1962, at Ernie Davis' Testimonial Banquet at Notre Dame High School.

Jersey presents immaculate condition, with minimal discoloration, while featuring navy tackle twill numerals stitched in orange thread. The proper "Wilson [size] 46" tag is affixed in the six-button crotch piece, as proper for this style Davis gamer. Jersey amazingly has no holes or scuffing, which helps solidify its spot as one of the more significant collegiate football shirts ever to hit the auction block. LOA from Heritage Auctions (game-issued).

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
