Worn during his fabled Heisman Trophy season!

1959 Billy Cannon Game Worn & Signed LSU Tigers Jersey.
The most famous football jersey in LSU history? It's a distinct possibility. On Halloween Night of 1959, the Tigers battled a fierce Ole Miss Rebels squad to a virtual stalemate, neither team's offense able to find a path to paydirt. Trailing three to nothing late in the fourth quarter, Cannon fielded a Rebels punt and returned it eighty-nine yards, breaking seven tackles before sprinting the final sixty to the end zone untouched.

Ole Miss would make one last valiant drive, coming up a yard short on fourth down with eighteen seconds remaining, the ball carrier wrapped in Cannon's arms. Photos of Cannon taking oxygen after the game find him wearing a jersey identical in format to this one.

Though a heartbreaking loss the subsequent game ended dreams of a second consecutive National Championship for LSU, Cannon won the Heisman in a landslide, earning 519 first-place votes compared to ninety-eight for second-place finisher Richie Lucas. It was Vice President Richard Nixon who handed Cannon the iconic hardware at the Downtown Athletic Club in Manhattan, describing the honoree, "not as an ordinary Cannon, but an atomic Cannon--the ultimate weapon in the arsenal of Paul Dietzel."

We can be assured of Heisman Trophy-season vintage by the placement of the number "20" on each sleeve, as they appeared above the shoulder striping during the 1958 season and were absent from the sleeves entirely in 1957. The digits are screened in purple, as they are on front and back, the shell constructed of a light cotton similar to t-shirt material and thus showing the wear and tear of a hard-nosed, two-way playing style. Tagging has been lost to the assault.

The garment is accompanied by a letter of provenance from the daughter of legendary LSU track coach Al Moreau, and she provides a photo of her dad and Cannon together, the latter wearing a football jersey (a 1958 style). The jersey is signed twice to Moreau's daughter in bold black marker, reading first, "To Jeanne, Best Wishes from Billy Cannon '20'," and again, "Jeanne, I thought I sold all of the originals, Billy."
