    Description

1949-50 Kyle Rote Game Worn Jersey. When Kyle Rote was inserted in the Notre Dame game for Heisman winner Doak Walker, for Southern Methodist in 1949, the team's back-up was transcended to standout status and immediately became recognized as a superior Triple-Threat player. After Walker graduated in 1950, Rote became the team's starter and as a result, he was named as a consensus All-American in his senior year. The first overall pick in the 1951 NFL Draft, Rote wore this fantastic Durene jersey during the 1949-50 seasons with SMU. Made by Sand Knit, the garment is the manufacturer's lightweight, highly-sheened fabric in a bright red hue, which is slightly faded. It has long sleeves with an elliptical-shaped elbow reinforcement area, and the sleeve ends, and round neck collar are a continuation of the Durene material with a reinforced hem, but no added elasticity. The number "44" on verso is zigzag affixed in standard, full-block tackle twill.

During this period, more college and pro teams utilized a twill with more highly-sheened satin; these numeric identifiers do have a "hint of satin." The lower left front tail sports a "Sand Knit" 1940's/early 1950's label with a "[size] 44" flap tag affixed to the right side quadrant edge. It has a "C" and "S" Sporting Goods (Austin, Fort Worth, San Antonio) local distributor designator within this main label. The wear is solid, and it does have two unrepaired holes on the right arm and sleeve, with some holes on the lower right, and three small ones on the left elbow area. Blood stains are present from game action on the right front "4". On the front of the jersey, there is a 12x15" area surrounding the numerals which are slightly lighter than the rest of the jersey, although not particularly noticeable. With high probability, this was due to the positioning within a frame which caused increased exposure to light in comparison to the rest of the jersey. Overall, a solid representation that was sourced along with a Doak Walker jersey of a similar style from a team photographer. LOA from Lou Lampson.
