Description
1938-39 Brooklyn Football Dodgers (NFL) Game Worn Sideline Sweater. An original franchise of the American Professional Football Association (which became the NFL in 1922), the Dayton Triangles took their name from their home field, Triangle Park, its shape created by the confluence of the Great Miami and Stillwater Rivers in the northern part of the Ohio town. But financial receipts dwindled as the team wallowed in mediocrity, winning just five of fifty-one games between 1923 and 1928. Thus, in 1930, a Brooklyn-based syndicate bought the team and relocated it to Ebbets Field where it took on the name of the beloved baseball team that shared residency, the Brooklyn Dodgers.This stunning late-1930's Brooklyn Dodgers football sweater, from this now-defunct early NFL franchise, marries superlative design elements, evocative of the day, with utilitarian comfort. The heavy gray wool body with half-zippered front is accented by a maroon wool zipper-back hood and pocket edges, and maroon ribbed-knit sleeve cuffs and waist band.
Front and back graphics are equally spectacular, with a massive "1939" New York World's Fair "Trylon and Perisphere" patch covering the upper right quadrant of the front, all sewn on orange and blue felt. A symbol of both the elegance of the art deco era and new hope for a world on the brink of war, the "Trylon and Perisphere" were also adopted upon sleeve patches by New York's three Major League Baseball teams in 1938, giving way to the Baseball Centennial patches in 1939. The verso, meanwhile, equally astounds with an oversized maroon and gray chenille football with the motto "Follow The Dodgers."
Number "4" on both sleeves in maroon felt may link the garment to guard Ralph Heikkinen (#4 in 1939), but jackets of this period were often issued as serialized numbers rather than to be consistent with jersey numbers, so we cannot be certain. Beautiful "King O'Shea" and "44" labels, safely tucked away inside, round out this amazing exemplar. With pristine condition, exploding colors and stunning period graphics all to its credit, this specimen would be a most welcome addition to any advanced football collection.
