Description
1969 Super Bowl III Full Ticket (Yellow Variation) PSA Good 2. The third edition of the Super Bowl still holds sway as the most famous of them all. Like most great sports stories, like the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" that is widely considered the greatest event in the history of American sports, Super Bowl III was a tale of improbable victory, of Goliath felled by a scrappy David. Quarterback Joe Namath's brazen guarantee of victory was laughable before it was rendered prophetic. But the most popular form of live entertainment remains spectator sports precisely because the uncertainty of the outcome stokes the flame of our curiosity. The stunning sixteen to seven Jets victory over the heavily favored NFL Champion Baltimore Colts would prove to be far more than a simple underdog tale, however--it was a game that precipitated a seismic shift in professional football. Lopsided Green Bay Packers victories in the first two Super Bowls had served to calcify the belief that the AFL was a fundamentally inferior league, clamping the brakes on a merger that had been agreed to in principle in 1966. In the Super Bowl III victory, the upstart league was legitimized in the eyes of many influential figures who controlled the destiny of the process.
The original owner of this ticket was actually there inside the Orange Bowl to watch the the dreamers defy conventional wisdom and their army of pundits and Vegas oddsmakers. The offered ticket survives in untorn condition because that owner was the wife of a motorcycle policeman in nearby Fort Lauderdale, Florida who was assigned to game security and thus gave her a two-wheeled ride through a gate devoid of turnstiles. An included notarized letter of provenance from that couple's son recounts the story in fine detail.
A half-century of storage has placed a few light wrinkles in the surface of the virgin ticket, and a few age spots on verso, but our catalog imagery should validate our claim that the rare and important relic presents without any distractions of consequence. Only twenty full tickets from this historic event appear in the PSA population in all color variations. Encapsulated by PSA Good 2. Notarized letter of provenance from original owner.
