The Third Oldest Known Football Program. To the best of our knowledge, this is the third oldest known football program extant, predated by only two other examples: Columbia vs Yale (November 16, 1872) and Rutgers vs Yale (October 25, 1873).

This remarkable specimen is further enhanced in desirability and historical significance as it also represents the inaugural Princeton vs. Yale contest, one of sports oldest and greatest rivalries. Although Princeton and Yale are thought of by most as havens for affluent intellectuals, these celebrated institutions of higher academia were also founding fathers of the hottest new 19th Century sport, football, which would one day become the most popular sport in the United States. On this day, in their 1873 season debut, the Elis succumbed as Princeton captain Cyrus Dershimer led the Tigers to a 3-0 triumph over the Bulldogs.

In marvelous, 19th Century Victorian typeface, the cover heralds "Foot Ball. Princeton vs Yale, Hamilton Park, Nov. 15th, 1873" with the program's authors, Tuttle, Morehouse & Taylor Printers, modestly credited at the bottom margin. Inside the rosters are neatly displayed, twenty gentlemen to a side on respective pages. The back cover leaves ample space for the attendee to record the names of the referee and two judges, along with the goal scorers and time scored, for future recollection and posterity.

Unscored and measuring just 5.5x4" when opened and laid flat, this diminutive keepsake stands tall as just one of the very few surviving football artifacts from this period. And considering its age and medium, this paper specimen is in impeccably fine condition, with only modest wear at the fold and very light browning as its only possible detractions. Considering its age, scarcity, condition, and historical relevance, this piece is irrefutably one of the most important and significant 19th Century football artifacts ever offered for public sale.
