    Description

1972 Walter Payton Signed Jackson State Program - Earliest Known Exemplar! Despite putting up spectacular numbers during his high school days and establishing himself as one of the best prospects in football, Walter Payton received no invitations from Southeastern Conference colleges or universities. After originally committing to play at Kansas State, he decided to go to school at the historically black Jackson State University. It was a magical squad, and despite playing alongside an array of future NFL greats, Payton stood out among the rest, while rushing for more than 3,500 yards, averaging 6.1 yards per carry and scoring 65 touchdowns.

Offered here is the earliest known signature from Hall of Famer Walter Payton. Consigned by one of Payton's Jackson State teammates, the team-signed program was obtained at Jackson State's 1972 homecoming game versus Texas Southern. Signed by the majority of the Jackson State roster in solid ball-point ink, it is highlighted by a remarkable signature from the man now known as Sweetness. Payton signed his photograph "Spiderman Payton, Walter Monk Payton II, Columbia Miss," making this the most important Payton signature in the hobby.

In addition, the program also features signatures from stars who played beside Payton - Jackie Slater, Robert Brazile and others. Some of the pages are partially loose, but it rates a solid VG-EX throughout. One of the most historic football pieces, and arguably the most interesting. Letter of provenance from Edward Hardy (Payton's college teammate). Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
