Description

1941 Heisman Trophy Presentational Banquet Program Signed by Bruce Smith & Nine Others. Without question, serious Heisman Trophy signature collectors will agree that aside from the elusive Nile Kinnick, Bruce Smith is by far the toughest signature to obtain from the category of prestigious collegiate football award winners. A true hero on and off the field, Smith served during World War II as a United States fighter pilot, and also spent time with select groups of military All-Star squads while in the service. He was a key part on the Minnesota Gophers back-to-back National Championship squads of 1940 and 1941, and briefly played in the NFL with the Green Bay Packers and Los Angeles Rams.

Offered here is an original Heisman Trophy presentational banquet program (6x9", twelve pages) that is signed by the '41 Heisman winner on the interior photograph page in 9.5/10 fountain pen ink, "My very best wishes Peggy -- Bruce Smith."

The "Autograph and Notes" page at that back is signed by an additional nine, including Bernie Bierman (College Football Hall of Fame, and Smith's coach); Big Bill Edwards (College Football Hall of Fame, first AFL president, New York deputy of street cleaning, Newark chief of waste disposal, and saved the life of New York Mayor Gaynor); Ed Widsett (College Football Hall of Fame); Pa Corbin (College Football Hall of Fame); Swede Larson (Navy head coach); Dan Topping (owner of the NFL's Brooklyn Dodgers and MLB's New York Yankees); Bill Slater (sports broadcaster and TV host), Lucius Smith (Bruce Smith's father), and one other. This lot also includes the evening's dinner menu signed by Swede Larson. The pen and pencil autographs average 9/10 in strength.

The front cover has a crease at the lower right corner and the back cover has some paper loss to the gold foil from when the program was removed from a scrapbook or display. The rest of the program is wonderful with all the pages intact and the original tassel still present. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
