    Description

1936 East - West Game Team Signed Football and Program. Since 1925, the annual East-West Shrine game is a post-season college all-star event that matches teams of players who attended college in the Eastern United States against players from Western colleges. With net proceeds going to some of the Shriners' charitable works, this great tradition attracts dozens of scouts from professional teams and thousands of football fans. Offered here is a 1936 East-West game ball, which was presented to Don Erwin of Colgate for being named the most outstanding player of the game. According to Erwin's family, he immediately handed the ball to lineman Ed Antonini of Indiana and declared him the real MVP for the key plays in the game. Antonini then took the ball around to various players and had it signed. A truly historical piece, this ball exhibits heavy wear and aging, while featuring the following notables, many who were drafted in the NFL: Dan Fortmann, Joe Stydahar, Ed Smith (the player who posed for the Heisman Trophy with the iconic straight arm), Dick Hanley (coach of Washington State and Chicago Rockets), Bernard Scherer (Nebraska - Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Pirates) and many others. Signatures range from barely legible to dark 8/10 black fountain pen ink. Also included is an original game program, which exhibits solid condition and tape remnants on verso. Extremely significant and rare piece of gridiron nostalgia. Auction LOA from James Spence Authentication. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA.
