Description

1930's Red Grange Signed Original George Burke Photograph to Joe Carr from The Joe Carr Collection. The most influential gridiron star of football's early years, Red Grange helped legitimize the National Football League when he signed with the Chicago Bears in 1925. Arguably, the most significant original signed image from the Galloping Ghost, this original 8x11" George Burke image was signed in 8/10 fountain pen ink, and features a historic inscription to the league's first commissioner, Joe Carr.

Remarkably, this exceedingly important rarity was narrowly spared burial in a public landfill when a self-described "junk picker" spotted an old scrapbook being unceremoniously tossed into a dumpster in Columbus, Ohio. The man loaded the book onto the back of his bicycle and rode home with an extraordinary Carr family archive that will be offered both within this auction and in more to come.

The bottom edge of the image exhibits considerable water damage, but the image portion, signature and inscription remains unscathed. The proper Burke studio stamp is displayed on the back, which adds to the significance of the one-of-a-kind artifact that represents two of the most important figures from America's most popular sport. Full LOA from PSA/DNA.
