    Description

1921 Green Bay Packers First Regular Season Game in Franchise History Original Photographs! - Early 1900's Green Bay "Stiller" Sports Photo Album (198). Presented here is an historic photograph album focusing on Green Bay, Wisconsin sports with images dated 1905 to 1923. The album has leather covers and black pages held together by a string binding. Inside on the first page in white lettering is the title "Collection of Baseball Notables 1905-06, 07, 08. 09, 10, 11" and "Property of Ernst Stiller 1-24-12, Green Bay Wisconsin" along with the instruction "Please handle with care", which is as true today as when it was written over 100 years ago.

Ernst Stiller appears to be related to the famous Stiller photography studio in Green Bay who were the premier photographers of the Green Bay Packers in the 1920's and 1930's.

The album contains 198 photographs almost all chronicling Green Bay semi-pro baseball from 1905 to 1915 of the various Green Bay teams who were members of the Wisconsin State League from 1905 to 1907 later changed to the Wisconsin-Illinois League from 1908 to 1914. During this time the team representing Green Bay in these leagues went by various names such as the Colts, Orphans, Tigers until 1909 when they changed their name to the Green Bay Bays which they kept through the final year of the league in 1914. Photographs show various stadiums, individual players, game action images, team pictures, etc. Almost all have hand written descriptions noting player names, dates, etc. The images are of a very high quality and aesthetically pleasing likely attributable to the photography expertise of the Stiller name.

The first 181 photographs cover the 1905 to 1915 time period. Then the last 17 photographs are dated from 1921 to 1923 with some focusing on a Stiller sponsored baseball team including photographs of team rosters. Structurally the album is fully intact with no condition issues. There appears to be about 14 missing photographs and these almost all based on the notations appear to be photographs of professional baseball stadiums in St. Louis and Chicago that Stiller visited. Please see our website for images of all the pages in the album.

Although this is an important archive of Green Bay baseball, the monumental historical significance of this album can be found in three photographs towards the end of the book that are dated 1921. These three images capture the historic first regular season professional game in Packer history. Green Bay joined the American Professional Football Association in 1921. The first four games of their season were against non-league semi-pro opponents. On October 23, 1921, the Minneapolis Marines visited Green Bay for the first official league game of the season. Luckily for history Stiller snapped three photographs at that contest and preserved them in this album. The first shows the football gridiron with the opposite sideline grandstand with the caption, "Crowd at Packer-Minn Football Game Oct 12- 1921". We must forgive Stiller for erroneously recording the wrong date of the game. The second photos shows a closer shot of a grandstand with the caption "Football October 1921" and the third must stunning image shows rows of parked cars and people walking into an already fan packed Hagemeister Park with the caption "October 1921 Parking Space at the Packer-Minn Marines Game". 1921 is also written on the border of the photo.
