Description

1905 Michigan vs. Wisconsin Hand-Painted Football Broadside from Historic Season. In one of the most bizarre occurrences in the history of team sports, the 1905 Michigan Wolverines football team won its first twelve games of the season by a combined score of 495-0 and then lost its final game by a score of 2-0. The loss also ended their 56-game win streak and prevented them from winning their fifth consecutive National Championship. Over the course of this incredible dynasty, Fielding Yost's Wolverines vanquished their opponents by a combined score of 2,326-40. (Do not adjust your monitor, you're seeing those numbers correctly). They actually had more points scored in their games than minutes played.

To make this tale even more fantastic, Denny Clark, the Michigan player who was held responsible for the loss when he was tackled for a safety trying to return a punt, killed himself twenty-seven years later to atone for his sin on Marshall Field in 1905.

The broadside offered here is from that fateful 1905 season when Michigan downed Wisconsin 12-0 to win their eleventh straight of the year and extend their unbeaten streak to fifty-five. Hand-painted, it depicts a Wisconsin player in red preparing to tackle a Michigan ball-carrier in blue and gold. (Was this a foreshadowing of Clark being tackled in the end zone twelve days later?) "Michigan vs. Wisconsin, Ann Arbor, November 18th 1905." The piece exhibits some creasing and border wear that is hardly detectable when laid flat. One corner is torn but intact and one corner has chipped off, but the colors are still bold and vibrant. This is a fantastic opportunity for any advanced collector to acquire a rare, early 20th Century piece from one of the greatest sports dynasties and impossible seasons with unimaginable consequences. 12x20".
