    Description

Circa 1970 George Halas Sketch by Leroy Neiman, Signed by Neiman. No artist has ever captured iconic athletes and sports events quite the way Leroy Neiman did. The artist came to full bloom in the 1970's and his colorful paintings and flamboyant attire were a perfect fit for the times.

A co-founder of the NFL and founder of the Chicago Bears, the iron-willed and no-nonsense George Halas had a profound effect on both that lasts to this day, more than thirty years after his death. While the Papa Bear wasn't quite the fashion plate that Neiman was, he was known to be a colorful linguist at times.

As a young artist, Neiman had once snuck onto the gridiron at Wrigley Field where the Bears were playing at the time to sketch the players. While a security guard was about the throw him off the field, Halas came over, took a look at his sketchbook and emphatically announced "He stays!"

Perhaps that early encounter prompted Neiman to produce the original pencil on paper artwork on offer here. It depicts Halas in three poses, pointing and conferring with a player, with the notations "Turn on the lights, Halas" and "Halas." Signed at the bottom by the artist. Matted and framed 20.5x19" (12..25x10.25" visible in frame). Wonderful. Full LOA from PSA/DNA. Full LOA from SGC.

The hammer price for my Mantle card significantly exceeded my admittedly conservative estimations, and I couldn't be more pleased.
