    Description

1998 Walter Camp Award Presented to University of Texas Longhorns Running Back Ricky Williams. Whereas the mighty Heisman recognizes "the most outstanding player" of a collegiate football season, the Walter Camp recognizes "the best player," an admittedly minor distinction that often results in the same winner for each. Just such an event occurred in 1998 when the Longhorns' star running back ran the table of elite college football hardware, claiming this distinctive prize at the end of a season that saw Williams claim the all-time college rushing record.

The Walter Camp Player of the Year Award debuted in 1967 and honors both the recipient and the award's namesake, a man often called "The Father of American Football." Camp's contributions to the sport include the line of scrimmage and the system of downs. Camp played halfback for Yale University between 1876 and 1881 and coached the Bulldogs to the national championship in 1888, 1891 and 1892.

Like the Heisman Trophy, the Walter Camp Award makes use of a figural bronze sculpture to supply its distinctive aesthetics, tracking back even further into gridiron history to a charmingly early vista of pre-helmet competition. The sculpture rests atop a wooden base to which an engraved brass plaque is affixed:

"Ricky Williams, University of Texas, 1998, Walter Camp Player of the Year."

The trophy measures eighteen inches (18") tall at its highest point, and weighs approximately eighteen and a half pounds (18.5 lbs.). Minor handling and storage wear is evident, but nothing of any real distraction. Ironclad assurance of authenticity comes in the form of a signed letter from Williams himself. Letter of provenance from Ricky Williams. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (Williams letter).
