1998 Doak Walker Award Presented to University of Texas Longhorns Running Back Ricky Williams. Two of the most beloved figures in Lone Star State football history are celebrated here, but this was no case of Texan favoritism. Though the namesake of this coveted prize was born and raised in Dallas, earning his own Heisman Trophy in 1948 as the star of the SMU Mustangs, the honoree swept all college football awards a half century after Walker's greatest collegiate campaign. This Doak Walker Award joined the Heisman Trophy and the Walter Camp Award on Williams' mantel that glorious season, and each is presented within this Signature auction.

The Doak Walker Award was founded in 1990 to recognize the top running back in college football, an honor Williams received twice, in his junior and senior seasons. This is the latter and more desirable of the pair due to its link to Williams' Heisman campaign. Other notable recipients have included Eddie George, LaDainian Tomlinson and Reggie Bush.

Williams was very close to Walker and honored the legendary veteran in the game immediately after his passing by rushing for more yards in a single game than any other Heisman winner, posting 350 yards on thirty-seven carries with five touchdowns in an October 3, 1998 defeat of the Iowa State Cyclones.

Like the Heisman Trophy and Walter Camp Award, this symbol of gridiron achievement features a marvelous bronze sculpture, a remarkably detailed study of Walker in his collegiate prime. He stands atop a wooden base affixed with an engraved plaque trumpeting the text:

"Dr. Pepper, Doak Walker Award, 1998 National Running Back Award, Ricky Williams, University of Texas."

A small chip to the lower left corner of the base represents the only condition issue worthy of note. Height of the trophy is sixteen inches (16"), weight eighteen pounds (18 lbs.). The award is accompanied by a detailed letter of provenance from Williams himself. Letter of provenance from Ricky Williams. Pre-certified by PSA/DNA (Williams letter).
