1990 Super Bowl XXV Player Format Lombardi Trophy Presented to New York Giants Linebacker Lawrence Taylor with Taylor Letter.According to football legend John Madden, Lawrence Taylor had as big an impact on the sport's trajectory as any player he's ever seen. "He changed the way defense is played, the way pass-rushing is played, the way linebackers play and the way offenses block linebackers," said Madden. Endowed with an athleticism unprecedented in players of his size, and an unquenchable thirst for destruction, Taylor was arguably the most essential component of an era of dominance in the Meadowlands that supplied two Super Bowl Championships to fans of the Big Apple gridiron in a five-season span.
Heritage is pleased and privileged to submit for bidding the most significant relic to emerge from that Big Blue heyday, the personal Lombardi Trophy issued to the Hall of Fame quarterback predator for his part in planting the second flag atop the NFL mountain. This particular edition of American sports' greatest event, Super Bowl XXV, will be forever remembered for its stunning finale, when Buffalo Bills kicker Scott Norwood last-second field goal attempt sailed wide right of the goalposts, sealing what remains the only one-point margin of victory in the history of the Big Game.
The iconic award is instantly recognizable, a figural football perched atop a triangular base engraved with text that reads, "Vince Lombardi Trophy, Super Bowl XXV Champions, The New York Football Giants." A raised NFL emblem enhances the display at center of that text. Taylor has autographed the football in black marker, that signature presenting at 8/10 strength. The award exhibits a degree of handling and storage wear, but this seems somehow apropos for a player who brought a new level of violence to his trade.
Ironclad provenance is supplied in the form of a signed letter from Taylor himself, who writes, "This is my original 1990 Super Bowl XXV trophy that was given to me by the New York Giants for being a winning participant in Super Bowl XXV."
