Description
1986 NFL Alumni Player of the Year Award Presented to Lawrence Taylor. "When the Super Bowl was over...Everyone was so excited, but by then I felt deflated. I'd won every award, had my best season, finally won the Super Bowl. I was on top of the world right? So what could be next? Nothing. The thrill is the chase to get to the top. Every day the excitement builds and builds and builds, and then when you're finally there and the game is over...And then, nothing."It's widely considered the greatest defensive season in NFL history, punctuated by a league-leading 20.5 sacks, a dominant victory in Super Bowl XXI, and the only unanimous election of a defensive player as the league's Most Valuable Player. It's easy to understand how Taylor felt that there were no dragons left to slay as he reflected on the 1986 NFL season, a vintage that will be linked to the Hall of Fame linebacker as long as the sport is played. One could easily draw a parallel to Babe Ruth in 1927--the greatest star of the franchise's most celebrated edition.
Advanced collectors have waited three decades for any relic relating to Taylor's peerless 1986 season to appear on the hobby's auction block, and that wait is finally over. The most important Taylor award to tempt bidders since his 1991 New York Giants Super Bowl ring commanded $230,000 in May 2012, this hefty lucite beauty assigned the ultimate quarterback predator the honor of "1986 Player of the Year" by the NFL Alumni Association.
Measuring twelve inches (12") in height and tipping the scales at over five and a half pounds (90 oz.), the eye-catching symbol of excellence entered the hobby through Taylor's son, and makes its first auction appearance in this event. It survives in nearly pristine condition, with only the slightest hints of display and storage wear. It is certainly one of the most significant football awards that Heritage has had the privilege to present to the collecting community.
