Description
1986 Jim McMahon Super Bowl Sunday Worn "JDF Cure" Headband - Chicago Bears Super Bowl XX. "I don't know. Probably throwing rocks at somebody." - Jim McMahon (When asked where he was when the Bears won the NFL title in 1963).The die was cast from day one. The first time Jim McMahon arrived at the Chicago Bears' training facility as a rookie in 1982, he exited a limousine with a can of beer in his hand. Mad Mac would play his entire NFL career unrepentant and at one speed: hell-bent. His punk rock meets Rambo persona, revealing an underlying disdain for authority figures, outraged the establishment while endearing himself to a generation Chicagoans. "Outrageousness is nothing more than a way to wake people up," he once proclaimed.
As the quarterback of the magnificently arrogant Bears, McMahon's brand rose to new heights, peaking during the team's near-perfect 18-1 1985 championship season, when he ascended to pop culture icon status. Aside from the dark sunglasses and crazy haircuts, one particular accessory defined McManiac - his headband - which he turned into some of the most iconic fashions pieces in sports history.
During the 1985 post-season, McHeadband took his signature fashion statement to new heights. For the NFC semi-final versus the Giants, he wore an Adidas headband, for which NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle fined him $5,000 for violating NFL uniform policy. So the following week, during the NFC final versus the Rams, he naturally wears a white headband with "Rozelle" hand-written across the front in black marker.
For the week leading up to Super Bowl XX, when McMahon was chastised for drinking, fighting, mooning, and public urination, he wore a headband with "Acupuncturist" written across the front to honor the physician who has relieved him of pain in his gluteus maximus.
Finally, on Super Bowl Sunday, McMahon wore three different headbands: JDF Cure (for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation) before the game and POW-MIA (for Vietnam War soldiers missing in action) and Pluto (for former Brigham Young teammate Dan Plater, a cancer patient) during the game. In Super Bowl XX, McMahon passed for 256 yards and ran for two touchdowns in a 46-10 thrashing of the Patriots. Letter of provenance from Jim McMahon's former agent.
