The Super Bowl MVP of the only perfect season in NFL history!

1972 Miami Dolphins Super Bowl VII Championship Ring Presented to Safety Jake Scott from The Jake Scott Collection. "On any given Sunday" is one of the truest aphorisms in sports, the notion that no team in the National Football League is fundamentally unbeatable. Though the first decade of professional football saw four teams avoid any losses, the seasons were shorter back then and each included at least one tie game. Only once, in a full century, has an NFL team claimed victory in every game it played, and here we present the ultimate commemoration of that peerless campaign, the Super Bowl VII Championship ring presented to that game's Most Valuable Player, five-time Pro Bowl safety Jake Scott.

Like the 1927 New York Yankees, the 1972 Miami Dolphins properly enjoy wide consensus as the most important team in NFL history for its singular status, and the collectibles marketplace echoes that supremacy. Only a small handful of championship rings from this perfect season have appeared on the hobby's auction block, and none as significant as Scott's.

Remarkably, the undefeated Dolphins entered the Los Angeles Coliseum to face the NFC Champion Washington Redskins as the underdog, and it's a virtual certainty that the prediction would have been validated but for Scott's defensive heroics. He'd twice intercept Redskins quarterback Billy Kilmer that afternoon, the second in his own end zone to maintain the Dolphins' fourteen-point lead with just over five minutes remaining. Though the Redskins would get a gift touchdown from field goal kicker Garo Yepremian's famous error just three minutes later, it would prove to be too little, too late. The Miami Dolphins had run the table for the first time ever, and the last time to date.

Scott would help lead the Fins to glory again the following season--that ring likewise appears within this Platinum Night auction--but this closing chapter of the perfect season will always serve as his defining moment. He'd retire at the close of the 1978 season after three seasons in Washington and largely disappear from the public eye, skipping team reunions and public signings to the great frustration of collectors fully cognizant of just how important he had been to those glory years in south Florida. His passing just a few months ago ended the longstanding hopes of countless collectors that he would participate in the public celebrations of Miami's special reign.

Certainly it was a great thrill to have been contacted by his family and offered the opportunity to participate in this posthumous celebration of the man who made perfection possible. Its virtually pristine condition seems appropriate for a man who shunned the spotlight after his career had ended--it appears the ring rarely left its original box and cardboard packaging.

A genuine diamond is set into a blue stone on the ring's face, with smaller genuine diamonds held in its orbit. Raised text at the perimeter reads, "1972 Miami Dolphins World Champions." Left shank provides team logo with text reading, "Scott" and "Winning Edge." Right shank features figural Lombardi Trophy, Super Bowl VII text and final score, and the historic words, "Perfect Season."

Interior band is engraved "Jake Scott" and stamped "Josten 14K." Band measures to a size eleven and a half (11.5). Total weight is forty-five grams (45 g.). Letter of provenance from Jake Scott's family.
