Description
1972 Bob Griese's Personal Leg Cast (Signed) - From Super Bowl VII season. After losing in a bitter loss to the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl VI, the Miami Dolphins quickly realized that they were very close to becoming a league powerhouse. Poised to make a run at the Lombardi Trophy the following in 1972, the team's hopes were diminished in the fifth game of the season when star quarterback Bob Griese was tackled by Deacon Jones and Ron East of the San Diego Chargers, when he went down with a broken leg and dislocated ankle.Thankfully, the Phins had a formidable backup in veteran Earl Morrall, but as the playoffs began, it became apparent that they were missing something. Head coach Don Shula knew they needed to turn back to Griese, and after the star QB told coach he was ready to play, Miami never looked back and went on to win the first Super Bowl in franchise history.
Presented here is Griese's leg cast that he wore after his injury in '72, and it is accompanied with provenance from the son of a man who received it from his neighbor - who just happened to be the nurse of the Dolphins' team doctor. Signed by Griese, his teammate Jim Riley and one other player, it is easily one of the most unique pieces of Dolphins memorabilia ever to hit the auction block.
