Description

Broadway Joe makes good on his bold guarantee

1968-69 New York Jets Super Bowl III Championship Ring Presented to Defensive End Verlon Biggs. He was the Jets' third-round pick in the 1965 American Football League draft, a massive six-foot four inch, 270 pounder out of Jackson State who terrified opposing quarterbacks during a ten-season NFL career. Biggs was at his best during his six years in the Big Apple, where coach Weeb Ewbank remembered him as "a great team player who was always where he was supposed to be." His forced fumble on the first play from scrimmage in the second half of Super Bowl III set up a Jets field goal to extend the lead over the heavily-favored Baltimore Colts to 10-0, effectively the winning score in the 16-7 final.

Tragically, Biggs was the first member of that Jets Championship team to pass away, taken by leukemia at age fifty-one in 1994. Left behind was one of the most coveted bits of hardware in the history of the professional gridiron, the Championship ring earned as a member of Namath's plucky Super Bowl III underdogs. It is just the second example that Heritage has had the good fortune to offer. The first, issued to special teams star Earl Christy, commanded $53,775 in our 2013 New York City Platinum Night auction.

The fourteen-karat gold creation by Balfour announces "New York Jets, World Champions, 1968" on a face studded with approximately two carats of diamonds set in a green football-shaped stone. The left shank recounts the winning tallies of both the Super Bowl and the AFL Championship games, while the right announces "Biggs 86," framing a Jets helmet in profile. The twin mantras of "Execution" and "Poise" underscore left and right shank respectively. "LGB 14k" is stamped at interior band, which measures to a massive size fifteen (15). Weight is forty-four grams (44g.). Light wear. Original Balfour ring box is present. Included is a letter of provenance from the New Orleans jewelry store that purchased the ring from Biggs' widow.
