The spoils of war from "The Greatest Game Ever Played"

1958 Baltimore Colts NFL Championship Ring Presented to Assistant Coach. No fewer than seventeen future members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame joined the battle on the frozen ground of Yankee Stadium on December 28, 1958, the twenty-sixth annual Championship game in NFL history. A national television audience was treated to one of the most compelling gridiron dramas in the history of the sport, the first NFL Championship to be decided in sudden-death overtime. The event, immortalized under the superlative of "The Greatest Game Ever Played," is widely cited as the beginning of the surge that would elevate professional football to its status as the most popular of all American spectator sports.

It is therefore difficult to overstate the significance of this primary symbol of the Baltimore Colts historic victory, sealed with a one-yard rumble to paydirt by running back Alan Ameche. The ring was issued to Colts assistant coach R. Herman Bell, whose name is elegantly engraved inside the size ten and a half (10.5) band. The fourteen karat (14k) gold Balfour creation boasts a sparkling forty (40) point diamond on its face at the center of raised text announcing, "Baltimore Colts World Champions." Two small sapphires separate the text. The ring shanks are nearly identical, each providing the Colts logo and the special vintage, one horseshoe engraved with the final score of the contest, the other repeating "World Champions."

The ring presents marvelously without any significant indications of wear, and weighs approximately thirty grams (30g). It remains housed in its original Balfour hinged ring box.
