Description

1943 Bruce Smith Signed Program. The second rarest autograph (after Nile Kinnick) of all the Heisman Trophy winners, halfback Bruce Smith led his Minnesota Golden Gophers to two consecutive national titles in 1940 and 1941 before winning the coveted award two days after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. After college, he served in the Navy in World War II and then played in the NFL before passing away at age fifty-seven in 1967.

Only a handful of Bruce Smith autographs exist and this example is all the more special in that it appears on a program (St. Mary's U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School vs. University of California) rather than a cut or team sheet, as most others do. Beautiful, flowing signature in fountain pen is personalized to his St. Mary's teammate, guard Bob Roland. Fullback Johnny Rosetto also personalizes and signs to Roland, "If you fly like you play football, I pity the Japs." Framed 19x14x2". Signatures NRMT, program EX-MT with slight paper damage. Full LOA from James Spence Authentication.
